Summertime…and the Livin’ is Busy!
Summertime. It’s all about being outdoors, enjoying family, friends, and all the fun! Going to weddings, graduations, and summer parties is definitely something to look forward to, and most of us look forward to these joyful occasions all year long.
These jam-packed summer days bring with them fun and enjoyment even though they can be tiring. Never fear – there are many ways to keep yourself feeling your best and looking marvelous for all those summer selfies.
The Benefits of Sunny Days and Summer Living
Summer days are good for us! The sun is an excellent source of Vitamin D, which is, of course, crucial to good health, including bone density and bone and muscle health. Deficiency of it can lead to all sorts of health repercussions, including:
- A higher risk for severe fractures
- An increased likelihood of catching the latest respiratory virus
- Increased inflammation in the body
- Increased risk of some autoimmune diseases
- Depression
- Decreased immune function
Those sunny days give us the chance to soak in Vitamin D, improving our health while we’re enjoying all the fun activities available.
Too Much of a Good Thing
While summertime is a wonderful time, there can be risks to experiencing too much of a good thing. Avoiding sunburn, dehydration, and insect bites are all part of responsible recreation for the healthiest of us. If you have an underlying medical condition, are elderly, or responsible for young children, you also have to be mindful of really hot, humid days, air quality, and finding ways to stay cool.
Staying Healthy This Summer
Enjoying those long summer days means we may become so engrossed in an activity that we don’t pay attention to the very things that will help us enjoy our plans to the fullest. To stay healthy and energized, there are several things you should do:
- Wear sunscreen
- Reapply sunscreen every two hours
- Exercise during the cool parts of the day
- Indulge in all those healthy summer fruits and veggies
- Don’t indulge in lots of sugar
- Use insect repellent
- Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate with water, sparkling water, or low-calorie drinks
- Monitor alcohol intake, which can lead to dehydration
- Maintain a regular sleep schedule
